What you are actually buying
This page does not sell — it explains. If you are weighing aluminium against steel, or wondering what approval is worth, this is the right place.
A skid plate is not a bolted-on sheet
The difference sits in two things: how it mounts and what shape it is. A Rival plate goes into factory points or chassis reinforcements rather than random holes, so an impact load spreads through the structure of the vehicle instead of through four bolts.
The second thing is the stamping. A flat plate of the same thickness folds under a point impact against rock; the same plate with a stamped rib takes it without permanent deformation. That is why these plates can be relatively slim and still do their job.
Aluminium or steel
Aluminium weighs about a third less for the same stiffness, does not corrode, and needs no paint after every scrape. It is the choice for long-distance travel, where mass translates directly into fuel use and suspension behaviour.
Steel takes abrasion better and costs less. In technical driving, where the vehicle regularly slides on its belly across rock, a steel plate wears more slowly — and when it finally bends, it can be straightened and welded, which aluminium cannot.
Part of the Rival range comes in both versions, and that is a deliberate decision by the manufacturer rather than an accident. If you are torn, write to us: the question is not which is better but where you drive and what the vehicle weighs.
TÜV approval on bumpers
Part of the Rival bumper range carries German TÜV approval — Hilux, Ranger, Amarok, L200 and Navara models among them. In practice it means you arrive at the inspection with a document instead of an argument.
Approval is not an automatic pass, though: it still matters whether the fitted bumper obscures lights, pushes the approach angle outside the permitted range, or removes crumple zones the vehicle manufacturer put there on purpose.
For bumpers without approval it comes down to the inspector. Ask before you buy and we will check what exists for that specific part number.
The part number settles everything
Rival splits its range more finely than most manufacturers: not 'Hilux' but 'Hilux 2015–2019, 2018–2020 and from 2020, 4WD, 2.8 and 2.4, EURO6 versions'. Part numbers look like 2111.4041.2.3 and every segment means something.
In practice, being one model year or one engine capacity out leaves you with a part that will not bolt up. That is why every vehicle page carries a note on what specifically to check, and why we ask for the year and the engine when you order.
